Uric Acid Kidney Stones

Site Guide Some Fun Facts

So , what exactly are uric acid kidney stones  and how do they form ?

High intake of dietary purines, high-fructose corn syrup, and table sugar can cause increased levels of uric acid. So , those with a normally higher intake of  meat and or meat based products will therefore USUALLY be more prone to having higher levels of uric acid. Often therefore , we can lower our chances of forming uric acid stones ( or of getting GOUT ) by simply decreasing the overall intake of these purine forming foods.

BUT….. There’s more to it than just that simple fact. For example here is what the national Institute for health says:

“ patients with normal uric acid excretion but a low urinary pH can develop uric acid stones, whereas those with a normal or higher urinary pH but excessive urate excretion will not.

Now isn’t that interesting! So , to explain a bit.

If your urine PH starts to get ACIDIC then , the lower the PH( more acid ) the greater the percentage of uric acid that will start to crystallize and form uric acid stones..

So , as you see its NOT just the overall levels of how much uric acid you have in your urine but also the PH of your urine.

It seems that around PH 6.5 crystals start to form , but , when you get down to PH 5.5 , the percentage of uric acid that starts to crystallize increases at a much greater rate of activity.
